Conservation
Our pest-free pledge
The Hauraki Gulf's pest-free islands are one of New Zealand's great conservation success stories. Here's how we keep them that way.
Ultimate Charters vessels are licensed by the Department of Conservation (DOC) and the Auckland Council to visit pest-free conservation islands and other islands in the Hauraki Gulf.
Before you board
When we're visiting a pest-free island, we ask all guests to:
- Check bags, packs and shoes for seeds, soil, insects and any stowaway critters
- Make sure footwear is clean and free of dirt
- Bring food in sealed containers
- Don't bring pets — even if they normally travel with you
On the island
- Stay on marked tracks where they exist
- Take all rubbish back to the boat
- Don't pick plants or disturb wildlife — including peacocks, wallabies and the local birdlife
- If you see a pest (rats, stoats, possums) on a pest-free island, tell us so we can report it to DOC
It only takes one pregnant rat to undo decades of conservation work. We take this responsibility seriously and we appreciate our guests doing the same.
